Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a question about Toon Vectors? Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions.

What is Toon Vectors?

Toon Vectors is an online collection of royalty-free stock vector graphics and clip art available for download at affordable prices. Toon Vectors is based in Austin, Texas and was launched in early 2012 by Chris Thoman, a software and web developer.

In a marketplace of oversized stock agencies that have become increasingly greedy and hostile to the interests of the actual content creators that make everything possible, our goal is to provide a smaller, more intimate venue for artists and illustrators to sell their creative works. We believe that the original artists, and not the middlemen, should receive the largest share of the profits from their own hard work.

How do I contact someone at Toon Vectors?

You can contact us by email at admin@toonvectors.com or through our social networking pages at Twitter, Facebook and Google+.

How do I make a purchase?

To purchase images, just add them to your cart and select the checkout option when you are ready to finish the order. You will then be transferred to PayPal to securely make a payment using your PayPal balance or a major credit card.

How is my purchase delivered?

Once PayPal has confirmed your payment, they will present you with a link to the Toon Vectors download page for your order. You will also be sent an email receipt that contains the download link. From the download page, you can download the images you have purchased immediately.

Do I need to create an account before making a purchase?

No, you do not need to create a Toon Vectors account before making a purchase. If you plan to pay using a credit card, then you don't need to create a PayPal account either.

Do you offer refunds?

Since the images at Toon Vectors are made available as digital downloads and thus cannot be "returned", we do not offer refunds.

Do you offer discounts?

We do not offer any discounts at this time, although we may offer bulk collection discounts in the future if participating artists agree.

Are there restrictions on how I use the images I purchase?

Yes, there are a few restrictions on how you may use Toon Vectors images. These restrictions are necessary to protect the intellectual property of our contributing artists and to protect your own interests as a buyer. Please review the licensing FAQ below and the full license agreement for additional details.

What types of licenses are available?

There are two types of licenses available for Toon Vectors images: a standard royalty-free license for $19.99 and an extended royalty-free license for $99.99. These two licenses and price points exist to strike a balance between a fair value for the buyer and a fair compensation for the artist while at the same time covering a broad range of usage scenarios with a simple pricing scheme.

The standard license covers most scenarios for online and print advertising, decorative, presentational, publishing and promotional use in non-resale works up to 250,000 copies. The extended license grants additional usage rights for larger print runs and for certain resale items - i.e. scenarios in which the artist is potentially losing direct sales of their image or would otherwise not be considered fairly compensated because of the scale and scope of the usage.

What usages are allowed and disallowed for each license?
Usage Details Standard License Extended License
Marketing Content Print and online marketing and advertising content not offered for resale or redistribution such as banners, billboards, brochures, catalogs, decorations, flyers, mailers, menus, newsletters, product packaging, presentations, promotional posters and print ads.
250,000 Copies

Unlimited Copies
Media Content Print and online media content offered for resale or redistribution where the image forms only a small part of the whole such as covers for books, magazines, CD and DVDs, inline illustrations, diagrams or design elements for stories and articles, graphics for mobile and desktop applications and games, and graphics for film, video or television broadcasts and streams.
250,000 Copies

Unlimited Copies
Digital Assets Value-added digital assets for non-personal use (i.e. for resale or redistribution) where the raw image can potentially be extracted from the item such as e-cards, themes, screensavers, skins, wallpapers, website templates and other document templates. This also includes all marketing content previously listed that is offered for resale or redistribution.
Not Allowed

Unlimited Copies
Physical Objects Clothing, accessories and other physical objects for non-personal use (i.e. for resale or redistribution) where the image forms a prominent part of the item's design such as buttons, calendars, cards, hats, mugs, prints, posters, shirts and stickers.
Not Allowed

Unlimited Copies

Certain universal usage restrictions apply to both the standard and extended licenses:

  • Images may not be distributed, shared, sold, transferred or otherwise made accessible to anyone else.
  • Images may not be trademarked or copyrighted, even if they have been modified.
  • Images may not be used as part of a company logo or other corporate identity.
  • Images may not be used in any material that is defamatory, obscene, offensive, pornographic, or as part of or in promotion of any illegal activity.
  • For online or otherwise digitally distributed media where the images can potentially be directly extracted by the end-user, images may not be presented or stored at a resolution greater than 1920x1080 pixels.

If a specific use case you have in mind is not explicitly allowed or disallowed above or you think the terms of usage are not clear, please contact us with questions or requests for clarification before purchasing images.

Can I buy exclusive rights to an image?

No, you cannot buy exclusive rights to an image. Most contributing artists sell their images on multiple websites making it difficult to track whether an image has already been sold elsewhere, so it is not practical for us to offer exclusive rights to an image.

Why can't I use an image for my company logo?

By the terms of the royalty-free licensing agreement, you would not be able to trademark or copyright your logo. Therefore, it would be highly inadvisable to use a Toon Vectors image for your logo and thus we have explicitly disallowed it.

What format are the images in?

All image downloads are delivered as a ZIP archive containing an EPS version 8 or version 10 vector file along with a 300-dpi JPEG at approximately 3000x3000 pixels for square images. The exact JPEG dimensions for non-square images are shown on the image details and cart pages.

Do the images I download have watermarks?

No, the circular Toon Vectors copyright watermarks you see on the website's image thumbnails are not present on the downloaded images.

What is an EPS vector file?

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a vector graphics file format containing instructions to render an image from geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves and filled shapes. Unlike raster graphics formats such as JPEG that specify a fixed grid of pixel color values, vector files can be easily scaled to larger or smaller sizes and can be modified without losing quality or distorting the image.

Most contributing artists use Adobe Illustrator to create their images and that is the recommended tool for working with the EPS vector files you download. You can also use Adobe Photoshop for simpler tasks such as converting and resizing the EPS to a JPEG, PNG or TIFF file.

If you do not have access to Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, there are many other software programs both commercial and free that support EPS files - the Wikipedia article about the EPS file format lists a number of these. For example, at Toon Vectors we use the open-source Ghostscript software suite to automatically generate thumbnail images from the EPS files uploaded by contributing artists.

Can I modify the images I purchase?

Yes, you can modify the images you purchase. Please note, however, that making modifications to an image does not grant you any additional rights to that image other than the usages specified in the license agreement.

Can I request modifications or new custom work?

Although Toon Vectors does not directly offer customization services, many of our contributing artists are available for contract and freelance work. The profile page for each artist indicates their availability for work and their preferred method of contact.

How do I become an artist at Toon Vectors?

As of February 2015, new artist signups are not currently being accepted.

What percentage of the sale price do I receive?

As an artist, you always receive at least 70% of the sale price of your images. You can also earn an additional 10% on the total order amount for a given customer purchase, which can include your own images or those of other artists, if your affiliate referral code is active at the time a customer makes a purchase. See the Affiliates section on this page for more details. All artists automatically receive affiliate accounts.

How and when do I get paid for my sales?

Commission payments are automatically distributed monthly to clear all accounts regardless of amount - i.e. there is no minimum balance required to receive payment unless you specify a minimum payment threshold in your account settings. All payments are made in United States Dollars and an active PayPal account is required for participation. If you are a citizen or resident of the United States, then your SSN or other tax identification number will need to be collected to comply with federal income tax reporting requirements.

How do I upload images?

At the moment, Toon Vectors only supports syncing files that have been uploaded to a Dropbox account. When you authorize Toon Vectors to connect to your Dropbox account for the first time, a special "Toon Vectors" folder is created and this is the only folder in your Dropbox account that we have access to. After you have added new images to your Toon Vectors Dropbox folder, you can either manually instruct the Toon Vectors servers to check for new images from your account dashboard here or wait for them to be detected during our automated sync process.

While this approach to uploading might seem a little bit different than what you are used to, we believe it offers several compelling advantages over traditional direct FTP and HTTP uploading. First, your Dropbox serves as a convenient and secure online backup for your files that you can sync between multiple computers and devices. Additionally, Dropbox provides web, mobile and desktop interfaces for batch uploading files that are well-tested and user-friendly. Finally, if other microstock agencies adopt this approach, then it will be faster and easier for you to remotely copy images between agency folders rather than being required to upload multiple times to multiple locations. In the future, we hope to add support for similar cloud drive services such as Apple iCloud, Windows SkyDrive and Google Drive.

What is the required file format for uploaded images?

All images must be uploaded as vector files in EPS version 8 or version 10 format, either uncompressed or in a ZIP archive. From the uploaded EPS, the Toon Vectors servers will automatically generate watermarked preview thumbnails and a ZIP download bundle including a high-resolution 300-dpi JPEG.

To speed up the tagging process, you can also include a JPEG of any size either separately or in a ZIP with the EPS that contains IPTC metadata with the title, description and keywords to be applied to your image. If the included JPEG is greater than 1500px in width or height, then it will be used to generate image thumbnails, otherwise they will be generated from the EPS.

What types of images can I submit?

All types of creative and professional illustrations are welcome, either in cartoon style or in other styles, including icons, patterns, backgrounds and other design elements.

However, we cannot accept images containing:

  • Nudity, profanity, graphic violence or otherwise offensive content
  • Trademarked logos, brands, characters or products
  • Depictions of real-world people or places that would require a model or property release

Hopefully it goes without saying, but the images you submit also must be original creations for which you hold rights to redistribute and that were not copied, traced or outright stolen from someone else.

How do I become an affiliate at Toon Vectors?

As of February 2015, affiliate signups are not currently being accepted.

What percentage of the sale price do I receive?

As an affiliate, you receive 10% of the order amount when your affiliate referral code is active for a given customer purchase. Please note that this commission will not be applied to orders that you place for yourself or that you place on the behalf of others. The affiliate referral program is intended to drive new traffic and sales by encouraging others to publish links to the Toon Vectors website and is not meant to work as a discount.

How do affiliate referral codes work?

Affiliate referral codes are short bits of text that can be placed in the query string of any Toon Vectors URL.

For example:
http://www.toonvectors.com/?ref=1
http://www.toonvectors.com/clip-art?search=smiling+cat&ref=1

When a customer navigates to the Toon Vectors website using a URL containing your affiliate referral code, a 30-day cookie is written to their browser cache. You will be credited with a commission on any orders that customer makes before the cookie expires. Each time the customer returns to Toon Vectors using a URL containing your affiliate referral code, the 30-day expiration window is renewed. A customer can have only one referral code active at a time, so if they navigate to Toon Vectors using a URL that contains another affiliate's referral code then your code will be replaced.
